High 5 at the LYG, Blackpool - May 2011

This year's finals for the Lancashire Youth Games were held at Stanley Park, Blackpool.  As well as the High 5 finals, it was also finals day for the girls’ football, tri golf and small schools’ high 5 teams.  All the teams met on the all weather pitches and were grouped alphabetically before walking out in front of the stands filled with supporters.  After a short warm up, coordinated by Blackpool FC's mascot, we were ready to start.  Just as our first game was due to start the heavens opened!

The sixteen Lancashire districts were split into four groups of four.  In our three group matches we beat Peel Park (Hyndburn) 5-0, Salesbury (Blackburn) 6-0 and Leverhouse (South Ribble) 10-2 - a fantastic recovery after being 2-2 at half time.  Three wins took us through to the quarter finals as group winners.  As we all took a break for lunch, it stopped raining and started to clear – perfect timing!

After lunch we had a quarter final match against Moorside (Lancaster), which we won 6-0.  In the semi finals we had a hard match against Sacred Heart from Pendle.  It was level after full time, but we managed to sneak it in extra time.

The final was against Our Lady and St Gerard’s from South Ribble.  We took an early lead and went 4-0 up.  We missed a couple of shots and had a couple of turnovers and before we knew it, it was 4-3.  We scored again to take a lead of two, and then defended fantastically to keep that advantage.  It was a very sporting final and there were handshakes all around at the final whistle.

Champions of Lancashire – FANTASTIC!
